NIO’s net loss widened to 6.056 billion yuan in the second quarter, and it is expected to "bottom out" in the third quarter

After experiencing a sustained sales slump in April and May, NIO’s second-quarter performance unexpectedly bottomed out again.

On August 29, NIO released the second quarter financial data show that the second quarter NIO operating income 8.77 billion yuan, less than the market expected 9.254 billion yuan, down 14.8% from last year, down nearly 20% from the first quarter of this year.

In terms of car sales, directly affected by the failure to control the rhythm of product replacement in April and May, NIO’s sales in the second quarter were 23,500 vehicles, down 6.1% year-on-year and 24.2% month-on-month. This is also the lowest quarterly sales of NIO since the second quarter of 2021.

With the decline in revenue and the continued expansion of R & D costs, NIO’s gross profit in the second quarter was only 87 million yuan, a decrease of 93.5% compared with the second quarter of 2022, and the same "halving" compared with Quarter 1 this year. In the second quarter of this year, NIO’s overall gross profit margin has declined to 1%, compared with 13% in the same period last year.

In the contrast of Li Auto has turned losses into profits for three consecutive quarters, NIO’s net loss is further expanding. Data show that NIO’s net loss in the second quarter was 6.056 billion yuan, an increase of 119.6% over last year and a month-on-month increase of 27.8%.

As of June 30, 2023, NIO cash reserves were 31.50 billion yuan, a decrease of 6.30 billion yuan from the first quarter. According to Horizontal comparison, Li Auto and XPeng Motors cash reserves were 73.77 billion yuan and 33.74 billion yuan respectively.

NIO CEO Li Bin said at the previous financial results meeting that in the first and second quarters of this year, new product launches affected the company’s operating cash flow. After that, some fixed asset investments and some R & D projects will be postponed, and in terms of going overseas, it will also focus on countries that have entered Europe. According to its estimates, with the rebound in sales in the third quarter, cash flow will improve.

In terms of cost expenditure, NIO R & D costs remained high, reaching 3.345 billion yuan in the second quarter, an increase of 55.6% year-on-year and 8.7% quarter-on-quarter respectively. The financial report pointed out that the increase in R & D expenses was mainly due to the increase in R & D personnel costs, equity incentive expenses, and the design and development of new products and new technologies.

NIO is the car company that invests the most in R & D projects among the "Wei Xiaoli" three. At present, NIO is simultaneously promoting the development of three car brands, and at the same time is conducting self-research on core components such as autonomous driving chips, batteries and motors.

Also in terms of sales expenses, NIO is also the one with the highest expenditure among the three new forces. As a user-oriented enterprise, NIO invests a lot in power replacement, sales channels, user maintenance, etc., which also leads to the problem of high operating costs for a long time.

Data show that NIO sales, general and administrative expenses reached 2.857 billion yuan in the second quarter, an increase of 25.2% and 16.8% year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter respectively. In comparison, Li Auto and XPeng Motors’ sales expenses were only 2.31 billion yuan and 1.54 billion yuan respectively.

NIO will further increase its sales staff to meet the need to sell seven to eight models simultaneously, Mr. Li said on a second-quarter earnings call, adding that channel sinking remains an urgent task.

"Since July, we have started to comprehensively improve our sales capacity. The goal is to lock in the sales capacity of 30,000 vehicles per month. The construction of this sales capacity will be completed by the end of September, and the results of the sales capacity building will gradually appear from October. In the lower-tier market, we hope that more experienced sales personnel can join."

Under the premise that these rigid expenses are difficult to compress, NIO needs to sell more cars and maintain a stable cash flow more urgently than other car brands. If the operating rhythm is wrong and there is a sales crisis, the cost of advance planning for forward planning may drag NIO into crisis again.

In the second quarter of this year, NIO was once in a dangerous moment. Fortunately, with the launch of ES6 and ET5T new cars, NIO returned to the "10,000-car club" in June. In July, NIO maintained its growth momentum, and the monthly delivery exceeded 20,000 for the first time, finally breaking the curse of "Wei 10,000".

According to the latest weekly report released by Li Auto, the cumulative delivery volume of NIO from August 1st to August 27th is 16,000. NIO sales in August will likely exceed 20,000 again.

However, according to NIO’s guidance for the third quarter, the number of vehicles delivered in the third quarter is between 55,000 and 57,000. This means that NIO’s average deliveries in August and September were between 17,300 and 18,300 vehicles. If NIO wants to achieve its goal of 250,000 vehicles for the whole year, it needs to sell at least 110,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter.

Li Bin pointed out that sales reached 20,000 in July, in part due to the decline in power exchange rights.Users who have rigid demand for power replacement will be released in advance. The preferential policy for power replacement ended in August, and it will take some time for orders to return to normal levels.

"The good news is that the number of test drives currently exceeds a record high, reaching about 10,000 every weekend, but it will take time from test drives to order conversion. In addition, considering the macroeconomic and external economic environment, we have comprehensively formulated this guideline target." Li Bin revealed that the next step will be to accelerate the conversion of orders through more channel coverage and sales capacity enhancement.

According to Li Bin’s estimate, NIO is selling ET5, ET5T, ES6 and EC6 will be listed in September, the sales of the four models are expected to reach 15,000 to 20,000, superimposed on the remaining models to increase sales, and monthly sales are confident to stabilize at more than 20,000.

With deliveries recovering, NIO expects third-quarter revenue to reach 18.90 billion yuan to 19.52 billion yuan, an increase of 45.3% to 50.1% year-on-year, the highest revenue guidance in history. From the guidance, NIO hopes to achieve a "bottoming out" in the third quarter.

NIO CFO Feng Wei said during the earnings call that NIOThe third quarter cash flow will be significantly improved, achieving double-digit gross margins, and the fourth quarter gross margin is expected to reach 15%.

  1 "The golden age of a writer should be between the ages of 40 and 55" 

  I did well in the college entrance examination, and when I applied for college, there were only a few schools in the country that could not apply. Because science fiction culture has developed particularly well in Chengdu, "Science Fiction World" magazine is in Chengdu, and Sichuan University has the largest science fiction club in the country. For science fiction, I chose Chengdu and Sichuan University. At Sichuan University, I joined the Science Fiction Association and met a lot of interesting people. In the past two years, with the continuous development of science fiction culture, the science fiction association has developed better and better. In the past, an event was held with more than a dozen organizers and two or three on-site audiences. Now, there are more than a dozen organizers, and usually hundreds of spectators can be attracted to watch. Science fiction has gradually become a "hot term" in colleges and universities, providing a space for campus authors who like science fiction and want to engage in science fiction literary creation to grow and communicate. 

  When I was in college, I started writing science fiction literature, which was relatively early among young people. I asked Mr. Liu Cixin a long time ago, and he mentioned a suggestion not to write full-time. Because at that time, the writing ecology was not very good, and it was difficult to make a living by writing. However, some changes have now taken place, also thanks to the influence and appeal of Mr. Liu’s "Three-Body Problem". This ecology has allowed the bottom writers to slowly feel some benefits. So I now feel that this trend has already appeared when I first wrote science fiction literature, but I still dare not write full-time. 

  I’m a three-time Galaxy Award winner, and the Galaxy Awards hold a special place in my writing of science fiction, and it even changed my life. If it weren’t for science fiction and the Galaxy Awards, I would be a hydroelectric engineer. Because of the Galaxy Awards, I quit my job, abandoned my original profession to pursue science fiction, and the entire trajectory of my life changed. 

  When I was able to write commercially, it became possible for my work to be turned into film and television, and film and television companies came to me for commissioned creation, then the income situation would be much better, and I began to consider my own status. "Famous as soon as possible" is correct. If one’s ability allows, becoming famous at a young age can indeed enjoy some of the benefits or benefits of fame in advance. However, in all professions, writers are different from other professions. The golden age of a writer should be between the ages of 40 and 55, and there are very few examples of young people achieving success. From a personal experience, I certainly hope to become famous through a work, but at the same time, I am prepared to start writing good things after the age of 40. Science fiction literature is a benchmark that requires a lifetime to pursue.

  2 "Hurry up and write, don’t let science fiction literature become non-fiction literature" 

  The charm of a novel is the most important thing is emotion. Writers try to find the emotion and shining points of the story before writing each story. In literary and artistic works, what a writer should do most is to move people, that is, to move readers. There are many kinds of moving people, which can make people cry or make people laugh. I want to make people laugh. I have been writing for nearly 10 years without changing, and I will persevere in the future. 

  Some readers have said that my science fiction world is humorous and warm. Regarding the creation of YFJ49 and LW31, they are all robots with flesh and blood, and even have human feelings to a certain extent. At first, it was accidental, I just wanted to write like this, not deliberately. I referred to the voice assistant Siri that had appeared at that time. There are cases of artificial intelligence and artificial manufacturing, which will make everyone feel close. I don’t really want to portray a cold image. Moreover, there have been such images before, and good works already have mountains, which are difficult to climb. If I write now, I will write according to this image. 

  In the earliest days, for example, when I first started writing science fiction, I didn’t have much reserves, so I could only go from the classic themes, such as the three classic categories, aliens, robots, and clones. Among them, robots are the first science and technology that I think entered our lives. I want to hurry up and write, otherwise it will become non-fiction in 20 years, and it will not be science fiction. But this kind of warm, cute and cheap little robot image, in my opinion at that time, its reading threshold will be a little lower, and the public will accept it better. A good science fiction will actually make the threshold lower and lower. A science fiction writer should not be obsessed with posting all kinds of obscure terms in a novel. The newly constructed concept is indeed fascinating and surprising, but the writer has many skills to bring the concept to the reader and make them understand. 

  I very much reject this kind of beginning. I introduce the whole world view or unique concept first, and then let the reader see the conceptual behavior of the character. A good practice is to tell the story first, first let the reader see the life of the character’s image, that is, the reader’s life, and then accept this concept step by step. Not to make a threshold alone, it should be the basic quality of a writer. I personally prefer street stall literature. If there are some theories in my novels, I will try to reduce the appearance of these theories in the article. Because theory will break the reading rhythm of the article, the reader may see 1/3 of the story, and suddenly there is a theoretical introduction of one or two thousand words. This is not good, like eating a stone when eating. Therefore, I will try my best to lower the threshold, and the effect is OK for now, but there is still room for further improvement.

  3 "The charm of science fiction literature is the integration of space opera and the future" 

  Science fiction literature should be a good story first, and science fiction ideas should take second place. 

  There are many kinds of good stories, such as setting up suspense, making people unable to stop reading, or setting up a very good core character, everyone cares about the person, no matter the plot twists or turns, this character will touch the reader’s heart. The story and characters should be well matched. In my opinion, these two points are actually more important than science fiction concept. If I think of good stories and characters, but it is not science fiction, then I will not write it as science fiction. I will write it as a mystery or romance novel and publish it in other genres of literature. 

  Science fiction literature is very strange. Science fiction is the only one that doesn’t tell stories, doesn’t write characters, and doesn’t even have to be very good at writing. As long as you come up with a science fiction idea and everyone understands the core image, you can feel the charm of science fiction. Recently, I published a new book "Star Traveler". Why is it called "Star Traveler"? Because I have written a lot of machines before, such as "Walking with Robots", "Robots", and "Wet Metal". Strictly speaking, they are all robot integration. In fact, what I really want to embody the charm of science fiction is space opera, which is the integration of the future. 

  For example, nowadays, most people would pick up a mobile phone, meet a person, and add a contact information, and you could never lose some way to contact them for the rest of your life. However, in the future, if you go to another planet, you will never see this person, and time and space will play their role again. This is the romance that only happened in that era, and this is gone forever. Therefore, in "Star Traveler", I wanted to create this image, and I finally named it according to this image. 

  For the future, I hope that more fresh blood will pour in and make the "sci-fi" plate bigger together, so that the cake will be bigger. If you really like sci-fi, sci-fi is something that can be persisted in, and even said, it is worth the author to sacrifice or give up something. The premise is that it does affect the author’s life. From now on, sci-fi is able to do this. Maybe I didn’t have the confidence to say this 10 years ago, but what I see so far is that this industry can support and even drive a group of people.

  Car registration is restricted to a common "standard"

  The "Report" disclosed that in 2016, the "Interim Measures for the Management of Online Booking Taxi Business Services" (hereinafter referred to as the "Interim Measures") was issued. As of December 28, 2016, researchers at Peking University found 19 local online ride-hailing service management implementation measures. Among them, Shanghai, Chongqing and Guangzhou have issued implementation measures in the form of local government regulations, and Hefei, Tianjin, Beijing, Anyang, Xiamen, Jinhua, Dalian, Luzhou, Zhoukou, Luohe, Pingdingshan, Hangzhou, Xinxiang, Ningbo, Nanping, Longyan and other 16 cities have issued implementation measures in the form of other normative documents.   Among the 19 cities, 10 cities explicitly require drivers to have the city’s household registration or residence permit. Among them, Shanghai, Chongqing, Beijing and Tianjin clearly stipulate that online car-hailing drivers should have the city’s household registration. Guangzhou, Hefei, Anyang, Xiamen, Dalian, Luzhou, Hangzhou and Ningbo stipulate that drivers must have the city’s household registration or residence permit.

  The low level of normative documents makes it difficult to punish

  The "report" pointed out that from the implementation of the new policy of online car-hailing in Beijing for two months, the traffic management department has made little effort to investigate and punish non-Beijing drivers, non-Beijing vehicles and non-compliant wheelbases, exhaust volume and other standards. On the one hand, the new policy of online car-hailing in Beijing is made in the form of general normative documents. According to the provisions of the Administrative Penalty Law, it shall not set any administrative penalty measures. And the local regulations on online car-hailing in Beijing and other places place too strict restrictions on car registration, household registration, model, etc., which violate the principle of proportionality in administrative law. Among the 19 local regulations on online car-hailing, only Shanghai and Chongqing have issued implementation measures in the form of provincial government regulations in line with the provisions of the Administrative Licensing Law.
